AI Policy

Purpose

The Summer of Math Exposition celebrates original mathematical communication. Participants should create work that reflects their own understanding, creativity, judgment, and voice. AI tools may assist the creative process, but they should not replace it.

The goal of this policy is to protect originality while allowing participants to use modern tools responsibly.

Guiding Principle

Your submission should be a work that you could confidently explain, defend, and reproduce yourself.

If AI produced a substantial part of your exposition, then it is not an eligible submission.

Here are a few examples of what’s allowed and what’s not allowed to illustrate this principle:

Permitted Uses

AI may be used as an assistant for tasks such as:

Brainstorming and research
Assistance in video editing, coding (including coding animations or illustrations) or debugging
Improving grammar, spelling, or clarity without changing the author’s ideas

These uses are acceptable because the participant remains responsible for all creative, mathematical, and explanatory decisions.

Not Permitted

AI must not be used to generate substantial creative or mathematical content for the submission.

This includes, but is not limited to:

Generating the script, narration or storytelling
Producing the core arguments, proofs or explanations.
Generating diagrams, illustrations, animations, or visual assets that form a significant creative component of the exposition.
AI Voices
Producing an exposition that is primarily AI-generated and only lightly edited by the participant.

Responsibility

Participants are responsible for every statement in their submission, whether or not AI tools were involved.

Judges may assume that every part of a submission represents the participant’s own understanding. Entrants should therefore only include mathematics they genuinely understand and can explain.

Enforcement

If the organizers reasonably believe that a submission relies substantially on AI-generated creative content, they may:

request clarification from the participant,
determine that the submission is ineligible,
remove the submission from the competition.

The organizers reserve the right to interpret this policy in light of new AI capabilities and unforeseen cases.

Philosophy

Summer of Math Exposition is not a competition to see who can best prompt an AI. It is a celebration of human curiosity, creativity, and the ability to communicate mathematics. AI is welcome as a tool, but the exposition itself should remain the participant’s own work.
