This Sunday, June 21st, is a holiday in Chile: National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Around this time, Indigenous communities in the Southern Hemisphere celebrate the arrival of the winter solstice, which marks the beginning of a new year for them.

The video displays very obvious facts.
The setup and relevance to people in real life for real reasons was great. I loved the music and the visuals, but I would’ve enjoyed more of a mathematical connection: for instance, how do Indigenous peoples measure the solstice? The tags include trigonometry but there isn’t much discussion of the trigonometry of the solstice in the video; it’s mostly a geometric discussion. This is a fantastically produced video; I just would love to see more math exposition in it.

I’m conflicted as to whether or not the mental model of the sun revolving around what looks to be a compass… actually helps?
Pros: I liked how you explained a somewhat uncommon topic. For those of us in the northern hemisphere we don’t see solstice and day and night from the perspective of southern hemisphere. I found it a bit difficult to read the subtitles but that was okay. Cons: I don’t feel as though anything makes this video stand out to me.
Very pleasant explainer! I like that the IRL dates are included and that the presenter mentions ceremonies and holidays that contextualise the solstice with the audience’s experience.
