Summer of Math Exposition

Kids are hilarious. Love to see their eyes light up at 2:30 “Oh yeah, you’re counting by two’s!” Things that are so simple to us adults that we don’t even think about it are mind-blowing revelations to kids.

Motivation: there is no clear motivation to learn about ratios. The cookies example is good and helps out in terms of being relatable, also becoming more motivated as the example became more complex. Clarity: There is a good build-up from the simplicity of the cookies example (2:1) to the slight complexity of the game example (3:2). This allows the content to increase gradually in complexity adding more accessibility. Memorability: The approach of the “teaching” setup made the viewer feel like a student as well, giving a more friendly environment for the viewer. The slow discoveries made by the students almost matched up with those of the viewer.

There was some overexplanation in terms of extending out the video much more than needed considering the level of ratios being taught. Moreover, the relation between ratios and fractions was introduced too quickly. It made the concept slightly confusing. The script is also not fully clear as can be told from the stuttering and lapses in sentence formation (which tend to affect comprehension).

Honestly, fractions are one of those things that kids and teens constantly struggle with. Great subject for your target age group. I can tell that the presenter would be able to keep children’s attention in person (a very difficult skill), but the introduction may not be as engaging through a screen. Editing it down a little bit with just a little rehearsal (again, understandably difficult with the two little learners in the video) would help. The interspersed graphics definitely help make your story clear, and having the kids learn/remember along with the topic is very fulfilling as a viewer. The evolution of the complexity over the length of the video was also done quite well. The format you’ve chosen (essentially a learn-along or a react) can be wonderful for making viewers feel like they’re in on the lesson. I think with more practice and some tighter editing/scripting, you will do great in your future work.

It’s interesting way to teach and the feel is fresh, but I didn’t got hooked, nor did I care about the video.

Work on presentation and hook people up.

This is a good explanation and i really like the practical party examples and calculations the animation is also very important to showcase the concept. The video itself is missing out on editing to make it shorter and more concise, but it’s a good starting point for a young content creator. the kids are very sweet ♥
