This is visually extraordinary. Full marks there. I don’t think the clarity is there. Maybe someone already in this field finds it relatively digestible, but I found this esoteric and poorly introduced/motivated. At worst, it is a very fun digital chladni plate, which is a very good worst!

The number of projects and topics, the wealth of knowledge, the quality of visualization. This site is an instant bookmark. As for the Chladni submission specifically, the topic is beyond my understanding, but I really appreciated the guided storytelling and the incredible amount of user tweakable parameters.

The rhetorical question is nice at the end on what Chladni sand vibration nodes and electron positions have in common. It was not mentioned in this non video but I’m tempted to want to say they are duals of each other? If there is time left (unless I misclicked) there were instances where I tried to pause the 2D/3D simulations and it still kept on playing. This aside the amount of work taken to create this simulation must have been astounding. This is truly a valuable physics simulation that is definitely worthy of top 3 in my opinion for prize money list in this submission. Interactive prompt question of where you think the electron would be is also good as well. One thing to consider for future projects is maybe an anonymous sample survey of data of who answered what for those options could be considered. Other than that this is near or dare I say is perfect.

The visuals are super impressive. I experienced a bug though which made exploring the explanations less enjoyable: Even when toggling the “Auto” option, The text would keep moving on automatically, which usually gave me no time to read and think about what I was seeing. But that should be easy to fix.

Electron orbitals were probably one of the first things that launched me into my lifelong interest in 3D visualization and geometry. Definitely enjoyed the visuals (and think I’ve seen that particular visualizer before in some black hole demos… very crisp and elegant presentation), but had a few nitpicks: In the intro, was unclear to me whether I could pause things (the auto button doesn’t seem to be obvious), and “watching where the electron is”, it’s unclear to me if there should be some other circling object I’m looking for, or is that whole cloud. I answered it as being “never on the ring” from my math background of zero probability on thin sets.

The second demo with the standing waves on a string was definitely more straightforward, and the more strong interactive interface, I’m sure, helps people grasp the notion of standing wave better (maybe, put this part of the demo first?)

What could be better is some brief word or reference about what s, p, d, f, etc. orbitals actually mean. I myself needed a bit of a refresher. In the non-slide demo, moving the slider for 3D view, I see surfaces traced out but it’s not clear to me how the “sand” is supposed to correspond to it. I realize the nodes are supposed to be where it does not exist. The surfaces as I understand from previous experience are supposed to be some surface of probability enclosed (like 90% or 95% or something like that).

Anyway, had a lot of fun playing around and getting things to look neat, but can’t say I had the easiest of time learning the theory. But we can only say so much in these things, right? (I am guilty as charged; it still seemed “lost” on the audience in my post last year!)

Fantastic visuals, but almost impossible to follow whats happening. There is an auto run button, but disabling it did not work for me, so it was very hard for me to set the pace. When I was looking at an animation, the text moves forward without having a time to read. Besides, there is a missing “story” point in the overall entry. I don’t know why should I even care about this, what the author is trying to say. So for me, it was a perfect visual journey without a meaning.

This widget was beautifully made - this entry is as much art as is it a learning vehicle. I have never heard of election orbitals explained using sand on the skin of a drum. But after watching this is does make sense. The illustration and the connection back to orbitals is rather satisfying. And the widget is fun to play with. There seemed to be a couple bugs, I had moved around the excitation point and I don’t think the script was properly placing it in pace with the subtitles.
