A presentation done as part of the undergraduate math research course at the university of guelph. Covers some basic neural network knowledge, some compression methods, convolutional neural networks, then gets into the result of the paper being an output aware compression method result.

Very good as a lecture, not so much as a general explainer. And the visualisations and animations could be cleaner.

It’s really nice to see a video go so much in depth into a single topic, checking out and comparing different approaches to a single, very specific problem. The introduction works well, assuming little experience from the watcher, but goes over quickly that someone knowledgable isn’t bored. However, the last half of the video is almost exclusively graphs and comparisons, with little to no explanation on what this means for the underlying problem.

Lastly, while not directly about the content of the video, the font used in the presentation seems to be misconfigured slightly. It looks like the font draws characters with a different width than it expects; leading to many words being “unbalanced” (i.e @40:17 “choices”: c and h are too close, and i is far closer to c than o). Of course, this doesn’t affect the educational value, but may be slightly distracting.

Very technical. Not the kind of video that’s easy to follow unless you’re specifically looking for this topic, given its length and level of specificity—but at least you didn’t skim over the details! Great work and nice animations!

Great analysis. Lengthy, but I don’t think it would be possible to apply the same compression strategies to the script… :)

I’m vaguely familiar with neural networks (i.e. I’ve seen 3B1B’s videos and similar discussions) so that’s my level of understanding. I was interested for the first few minutes, but lost interest as it got increasingly technical, and I couldn’t see where it was going. You have to go big picture first and tell the viewer why they should care before getting into the minutiae. That said, the graphics were interesting - I picked up some meaning as I skipped around after the 10 minute mark. I would make sure to have others listen to your narration to see if it’s intelligible - you tend to speak fast and swallow important words. Overall I’d aim for a shorter video, go over broader concepts first, and then get into details. That way even if I don’t watch the whole thing I’ll have gotten something out of it.

One major drawback of this entry is the overwhelming amount of items it contains. I found, separately, the video too long and the voice too fast; the combination makes it worse. However, the topic must have been very interesting for a context-specific presentation and the visuals probably exceeded expectations then. For SoMe, it is lacking structure, suspense, focus, even a bit of magic.

I really enjoyed this entry. The explanation was clear and engaging, and the ideas were presented in a way that made the topic easier to follow. I especially appreciated the effort put into making the mathematics intuitive and accessible. This is a thoughtful and valuable contribution to online math exposition.
