My integral for the Heidelberg Integration Bee 2026

Organizers of the Heidelberg Integration Bee 2026 invited me to submit an integral for their competition. In this video I explain the solution and some of the history behind the Feynman trick.

Not much of an explanation overall. And the actual integral technique comes down to “remember this other formula”.

The live portion of the video and the interaction with the math club made this more fun, I think.

The story of the competition was engaging, but I personally felt the video leaned too heavily on the event narrative rather than the mathematical theory. I would have preferred a deeper dive into the mechanics behind the Feynman trick or more related concepts.

I never heard of this integration bee before, so I think its interesting, but the memes that are used are a bit jarring and probably should be toned down.

The integration bee looks like a lot of fun, and it’s exciting that you were invited to submit a problem.

Feynman’s trick is useful, but you blow through it a bit quickly (it’s less than a third of the video). And you show how it gets to the answer, but not why someone would think to use it here. What feature of this integral makes Feynman’s trick a natural choice? And how did you design the integral to make that happen?

This exposition does more than present a solution to an integral: it introduces us to a whole universe surrounding the competition. I particularly enjoyed the sense of discovery and the historical context, which makes it feel almost like travelling through a mathematical culture rather than simply solving a problem. The humor and the nerdy references also add personality and make the video enjoyable to watch.

The integral itself is not particularly difficult, so for me, the most interesting part was the discussion of the Feynman trick and its history. However, I found the explanation of the trick somewhat too much in the physicist style: the result and intuition are presented quite naturally, but the mathematical conditions that justify the argument are largely left implicit. In particular, when differentiating under the integral sign, it would be helpful to briefly mention the assumptions that allow us to interchange differentiation and integration. Even a short explanation of these conditions would make the exposition more mathematically complete without making it significantly more technical.

Overall, I liked the way the video places a relatively simple integral within a much broader mathematical and cultural context. The historical background, humor, and personality make it engaging. That said, I would consider it good rather than outstanding. To make it truly stand out, I would have liked either a deeper exploration of the Feynman trick itself or a more surprising insight into why it is so powerful. The broader context is what motivated me to keep watching, and I think that aspect could be pushed even further.

I really like this video. At first I thought the integration bee narrative was going to be mostly set dressing, but then it turned out to be a pretty major part of the video’s you incorporated it into the story. If there’s any criticism I have, it’s that I wish you had leaned on it more. Could you describe how your solution compares to either of the competitors’?

As someone who has done only a couple hundred integrals, I fell for the classic fallacy of using the power rule on d/dt(x^t) at 5:55. A brief reminder of the correct integration would probably be appreciated by your intended audience.

(I didn’t learn calculus in Spanish, and I don’t get the joke, but I didn’t find it offputting. Tastefully done.)
