This Manim based video aims to draw a connection between Music, Maths, and the Mind. It touches on the fascinating Mathematics of fugues, and their intrinsic (and little known) relationship to strange attractors and chaos theory. To build on this, we introduce and try to understand differential equations and the limits of our predictive abilities, and some conflicting ideas in quantum mechanics which cause this.

This video started out interesting and left me confused. As soon as you went into the strange attractors, the musical aspect was dropped and unfortunately not returned to. This left me waiting for you to come back to what I had understood to be the overarching and most interesting topic. The technical execution of the video is good, but many of the visualisations stay close to what has already been done in manim before, e.g. the Lorentz attractor. In short, the video shows promise but, in my opinion, does unfortunately not manage to form a cohesive narrative. I believe it would have benefitted from focusing on one aspect, especially music since this is the most novel, and trimming down the others to what is necessary to support the music part.

I was very excited about the video at the outset, but I don’t believe it delivered on its promise. Yes QM has uncertainty, yes chaos theory says some systems are dependent on initial conditions, but it’s a huge leap to say that’s why we have consciousness.
Having said that, the use of Manim was impressive, and the video was well done.

Although it could become quite complex with longer music compositions, as a musician myself I find it very beautiful to render music in 2D graphs like this (or any other unconventional way). I kind of want this now as a plugin in my music composition program (if that isn’t a thing already).

Overall this is a wonderful video: beautiful visualizations, well explained math with a good and understandable voice, the most important things have been explained, there’s enough context and providence, and much more. It was as if seeing a 3blue1brown video.

I would have loved to see a more complex musical composition turned into a 2D graph to see how far we can stretched this visualization method.

I felt very relaxed watching this video. Each explanation and corresponding visual followed naturally from the previous one. The multiple callbacks to previous visualisations helped a lot to cement the ideas and keep the various concepts fresh in my mind for when they were needed again

This is an excellent video. The graphics were amazing, especially around 12:00. This is an exciting topic. I love how we connect music to math and then beautiful graphs. Amazing!

I am not sure where the Mind is in this video, and I did not come away with an understanding of the connection between the concepts in the video. For example, I did not understand exactly what was meant by saying that melodies are strange attractors. The part about music was very unique and the visuals were pretty.

Initial Thoughts

Interesting video! I like that you brought music, phyiscs, and math together. Those are three of my favorite subjects, so the combination of them definitely caught my attention.

What Went Well

When I saw that your intended audience included high-school students and your subject matter included differential equations, I was skeptical that it would work well. After watching, I felt like your explanation of differential equations was simple enough and visualized well enough to make it clear for people with a high-school level understanding of math, so very well done! That’s a tough thing to do, and you did it very well. I enjoyed the way you visualized the subject and counter-subject graphically. That was a new way of looking at music for me, which is fun after 20 years of studying music. Thanks for that new perspective.

Ideas for Improvement

Before watching your video, I read the description, and the three connected things listed there are “Music, Maths, and the Mind.” By the end of the video, I could see the connection between Music and Maths pretty well, but I felt like the Mind was only briefly mentioned, so I didn’t come away seeing the connection to that one well. If I had come across the video without reading the description first, I don’t think I would have felt like the connection to the Mind was something that was missing, but after reading the description, that was something I was looking for in the video. Another thing I’d like to see is something to back up Madden’s claim that those curves from music can be understood as strange attractors. That’s probably beyond the scope of this video, since Madden’s statement was the connecting point between the music and differential equations, but it may be an interesting topic for a future video.

Overall, very well done! Definitely glad I watched, and I’ll be in watching more of your content.

This idea is really cool! I think that the topic could have been teased better in the intro to make the audience care even more and become more curious and invested. Very good!

This was a really fun video to watch. The production is great, the animations are fantastic. The music and physics connection is intriguing that invites the viewer to watch. The story is also good; however, I must admit that I lost track of the topic along the video. As there is no proof that the musical loop forms an attractor, we must simply believe that this is the case.
